More than a century ago, families from St. Barthélemy, later known as “Frenchies” or “Cha Chas,” journeyed to the Virgin Islands in search of opportunity. Enduring long and uncertain sea voyages, they relied on their skills as fishermen and farmers to survive. Through hardship, they discovered the strength of community, gathering to share meals, stories, and companionship. This tradition of coming together became a lasting part of their culture and found a home in 1937 with the opening of the Normandie Bar in Frenchtown. More than a bar, it served as a community gathering place where generations, including members of my own family, built friendships, exchanged local news, and celebrated life.
Decades later, I became the owner of the establishment and renamed it Sambuca’s Bar & Bistro in honor of my bulldog, Sambuca. While the name changed, the spirit remained the same. Sambuca’s was created to honor the resilience and traditions of those early settlers while offering an elevated dining, entertainment, and gaming experience. Guided by community, hospitality, and excellence, it is a place where people can gather, celebrate, and create lasting memories. From the courageous journey of our ancestors to every meal and toast shared today, Sambuca’s preserves a legacy built on connection, perseverance, and the simple joy of bringing people together.
